GREEN MOUNTAIN MONASTERY ~ THOMAS BERRY SANCTUARY

Honoring Our Abenaki First Nation People

As Sisters of the Earth Community at Green Mountain Monastery in Greensboro, Vermont we acknowledge the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Elnu Tribe of the Abenaki Nulhegan  Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation, Abenaki Nation of the Missisquoi and Koasek Traditional Band of the Koos Abenaki Nation, on which we are living and working.

This land is known by its original inhabitants, as N’Dakinna, the Land of Dawn.

The borders, created by non-native governments, associated with Vermont, Canada and the US are colonial divisions.   Therefore, we acknowledge that the laws allowing the original peoples and tribes in the state of Vermont to pursue their culture,  does not ensure full tribal access in their own native homeland.

We invite us all to deepen our understanding of Earth as a Single Sacred Community by honoring the three foundational principles of the universe: differentiation, interiority and communion and inclusion therein of the Abenaki Nation.
